About the project
I found this Ercol chair with its original fabric together with the Utility Scheme CC41 label still intact which makes this particular chair an original early mid century model. The fabric I believe is from Tibor Riechs ‘Deep Textures’ range. Reich designed ‘Deep Textures’ for The Festival of Britain including The Southbank Festival Pavilions, Fairway Café, The Press Room, and The Royal Shakespeare Theatre Stratford upon Avon. It was also around this time that major furniture manufacturers upholstered using Tibor fabrics including Ernest Race, Gordon Russell, Robin Day, Howard Keith, G Plan and Ercol.
Unfortunately the fabric had perished and was too far gone to salvage.
The chairs beech frame was stripped back, sanded and oiled and a fresh modern mid century style screen printed design on natural linen by Thorody was used to give this classic chair a new lease of life.
